The Network and Computer Systems Administrator is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the organization’s computer networks. They organize, supervise, and oversee installation and support of the organization’s computer systems, including local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), network segments, intranets, and other data communication systems.

NETWORK AND COMPUTER SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Determine what the organization needs in a network and computer system before building it out.
  • Oversee installation of all network hardware and software, as well as necessary systems upgrades and repairs.
  • Help maintain network and computer system security and ensure that all systems are operating correctly.
  • Collect and analyze data to evaluate network/systems performance and help make the system work better, faster, and with greater accuracy; identify and implement system improvements where needed.
  • Prepare training materials and train users on the proper use of hardware and software when necessary.
  • Solve problems quickly when a user or an automated monitoring system lets them know about a problem.

NETWORK AND COMPUTER SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, computer engineering, or a related discipline is required. Five (5) or more years of experience as a systems administrator is also required. Systems administration certification (e.g., IEEE, CompTIA Network+, Cisco) is desirable. Must have demonstrated analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Must be capable of leading a diverse team of computer/network technicians, systems analysts, software developers, and other computer professionals. The position requires someone with exceptional communication skills, both orally and in writing; presentation skills/ experience are a definite plus. IT project management experience is a must.

NETWORK AND COMPUTER SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to communicate orally with customers, vendors, management, and coworkers is crucial. Regular use of phone and email for communication is essential. Hearing and vision correctable to within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, receiving ordinary information, and preparing or inspecting documents.

The ability to remain in a stationary position roughly 50% of the time, as well as the ability to move about the office occasionally (accessing files/storage, office equipment, computers and other office productivity devices, attending meetings, etc.), is required.

Using a computer while sitting for extended periods is common. Must also be able to position self to maintain equipment, including under tables and desks.

No heavy lifting is expected; occasional exertion of 20-30 lbs. of force (e.g., carrying laptops, desktops, peripherals) may be required. Good manual dexterity required to use common office equipment (e.g., computers, mobile devices, calculators, copiers, scanners).

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The job is performed indoors in a traditional office setting. Extended periods of sitting while using a computer or other devices are common.
